COMBAT IN WORLD WAR II

BLITZKRIEG – “LIGHTNING WAR” Germany used a technique of rapid advance with tanks, motorized infantry, and close air support Caught countries totally by surprise and resulted in total German supremacy from 1939-1941 Germany was able to capture Poland, Denmark, Norway, France, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and the Balkans in the first two years of the war

TANKS Introduced in World War I, by World War II the tank had been fatally perfected The German Panther and Tiger tanks were the most effective, but the Sherman tank used by the Allies was sufficient when used with air support There was literally no defence against the tank

ARTILLERY These 25lb guns had to be pulled by trucks to the site Took 6 men to set up & 3 to operate Would fire at tanks or be aimed in the air to lob explosives into enemy lines Range of 11-16 km
