What does Peg tell us about mental health in Winnipeg? Peg tells us… One in four Winnipeggers had a diagnosed mood or anxiety disorder over the past five year period. City of Winnipeg 24.4%

Peg tells us… There is large variation in percentage of the population diagnosed with mood and anxiety disorders in different neighborhoods. Point Douglas 27.4% Inkster 18.3%

Peg tells us… The city-wide rate of diagnosed mood and anxiety disorders has not shifted since the preceding five- year period (2002/03–2006/07).

Peg tells us… There are differences in the rates of diagnosed mood and anxiety disorders for different community areas in Winnipeg.

Why do mood and anxiety disorders diagnosis matter? Mood and anxiety disorders are an indicator of mental health—a major part of Winnipeggers’ well-being. Mood and anxiety disorders, and mental illness more broadly, affectmany aspects of well-being, including: 1.Employment: The unemployment rate of people with serious mental illnesses is in the range of 70 to 90 per cent 2.The economy: According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, mental illness costs the Canadian economy an estimated $51 billion per year. 3.Safety: People with mental illnesses are more than twice as likely to be victims of crime. 4.Physical health: Mental and physical health are intimately linked: people with serious mental health conditions are at high risk of chronic physical conditions and vice versa.
