The What’s, How’s and Why’s of ‘Open Access’

$22, Open Access $14, $12, Some sample 2008 journal prices…

Yikes!

What? “Open-access (OA) literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions.” -Peter Suber Open Access

Two complementary strategies to achieve open access: 1. Publish in an Open Access journal 2. Publish in a conventional journal and deposit a copy of the published paper in an open access archive. How? -pay for dissemination, not access Open Access

Open Access journals -author-pays, subsidized, advertisements, society membership fees -or, some combination or variation of above. How? Open Access

Open Access repositories -institutional or disciplinary (If the journal has a self-archiving policy) How? Open Access

Why? Widen dissemination, accelerate research, enrich education, share learning among rich & poor nations, enhance return on taxpayer investment in research, reduce the overall costs of scholarly publishing. Open Access
