 Goal for today:  To develop a better understanding of theme

The theme’s the thing Appearance vs. reality Love conquer s all Love War and peace Don’t judge a book by its cover Betrayal War is evil Do not betray friends

 A few reminders about theme  It is NOT directly stated in the text  It is NOT the same thing as plot  It is NOT the conflict  It is NOT expressed in a single word, in the text  It is the central, underlying and controlling idea of a work of literature

 Theme is often confused with the moral  Example  Notice:  Theme is an idea while moral represents a lesson MoralTheme Don’t judge a book by its cover. Appearance versus reality

 Theme often…  Shows us how we can make our lives better and deal with a problem  It is the idea the writer wishes to convey about the subject The writer’s view of the world or a revelation about human nature  It could be true for all people

 Read “The Interlopers” by Saki in groups of four  Pause at the end of each page to compare notes  As you read, underline/highlight Any words that tickle your fancy!

The Interlopers  What is an interloper?  Definition:  A person who becomes involved in a place or situation where they are not wanted or are considered not to belong.

 Turn each of the following morals into themes Treat others as you wish to be treated. It’s what’s on the inside that counts. Love conquers all.

Reminders  Homework: Be sure to have read up to the end of Chapter 5 of Miss Peregrine’s
