Summary This book is about a Jewish girl named Devorah Bernstein who lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is in the middle of World War II, her brothers are off to war and, she finds herself in a life of sadness and worry. Will she ever be happy again?

Memorable Quote “Is it wrong to be happy?” This was asked by Devorah on page 3 when she comes home from a fun ballet class and remembers her cousin’s sad letter.

Time Period 1941 This was the time when World War II was going on. Even in Canada there was racism against Jewish people.
