The NCCP Philosophy 1.Provide every athlete in a sport program with a positive experience 2.Provide an opportunity for athletes to achieve their full potential through sport 3.Use sport as a personal development tool

Athletes’ Reasons for Being in Sport 1.A desire for achievement – Improve, master new skills, and pursue excellence 2.A need for affiliation – Positive and friendly relations with others 3.A desire for sensation – Experience the sights, sounds and physical feelings surrounding a sport or the excitement in a sport 4.A desire for self-direction – Sense of control, to feel in charge

Achievement Motivated Athletes Set realistic, progressive goals Point out individual improvement Keep written records of progress in diaries, logs, etc. Schedule games or meets with suitable opponents Meet regularly to discuss progress and re- evaluate goals

Affiliation Motivated Athletes Make interaction with other a part of each practice Have team talks after each practice Provide opportunities for social get-togethers after games or meets Encourage athletes to help one another and to do things together Have team parties Remind athletes that everyone is a valued member of the team
