Stormwater Rain and melting snow Collected by storm drains and flows into streams, rivers, lakes.
Storm Water Management. Storm water is rain or snow melt that does not soak into the ground. It flows from rooftops, across paved areas and through sloped.

Trout Unlimited Canada Yellow Fish Road™ Program “To conserve, protect and restore Canada’s freshwater ecosystems for current and future generations”

What Makes Trout So Special? Trout are an indicator species and can only live in clean water. Canaries mining for coal?

Do We Affect The Trout’s Habitat? Yes… Our Activities Create Pollution For Trout and other Wildlife

Impervious Surfaces Do Not Permit The Absorption Of Liquids. Roads Parking Lots Office Buildings Sidewalks Schools Shopping Malls Neighborhood Gas Station Restaurants Your House Rain & snowmelt travels as surface water MUCH FASTER In urban areas than in natural areas. Storm water that drains off of impervious surfaces and into surface waters forms non-point pollution.

Impervious Surfaces Increase Pollution More = =

Causes of Pollution

Dirt and Gravel get washed from lawns, constructions sites, and driveways into road gutters. This causes murky water. Murky water gets less light, so many animals, plants, and eggs cannot survive. Water temp increases. Fish eggs are smothered. Aquatic organisms have to ‘see it to eat it. Why Fish Need Clean Water

37% of Canadians believe water entering a stormdrain goes to a treatment plant. IT DOES NOT! Dirt, oil, gasoline, gravel, salt, garbage, animal droppings and chemicals (fertilizers & pesticides) are washed into the storm sewers. The last stop for stormwater is the Red Deer River.

The Key To Non-point Pollution Is… WASTE WATER is treated. STORM WATER is NOT treated.

Something To Think About

Our Contamination … Ends Up Here!

How Does Contaminated Water From Roads, Driveways and Sidewalks Get To The River? Through this!!

Storm Drains Lead Directly To the River? Photographs by Trout Unlimited Canada Storm Drains collect water and other debris from roads, sidewalks, lawns, etc. Storm Drains are connected to an underground system of pipes which empties into the river (outfalls).

Ways We Can Protect Our Freshwater Take your car to a car washTake your car to a car wash Don’t over use fertilizers, herbicides and/or pesticidesDon’t over use fertilizers, herbicides and/or pesticides Put sweepings into the garbagePut sweepings into the garbage Leave grass clippings on the lawnLeave grass clippings on the lawn Pick up pet wastePick up pet waste Fix leaks in your carFix leaks in your car

Non-point pollution Is The Cumulative effect of ALL OF US Living Our Normal Lives. Let’s all be the solution to non-point pollution!

Here’s What You’ll Be Doing * Marking storm drains * Collecting litter * Delivering handbills * Recording storm drains marked and handbills delivered

Safety First… Safety First… 1.Always stay in sight of supervisor. 2.Cross street only with supervisor. 3.Never enter a residence. 4.D esignate painted areas using pylons. 5.W alk carefully during activity. 6.S tay with group, don’t get separated. 7.Avoid homes you are unsure of or where a dog is.

Final Reminders… 1.Painters, roll up sleeves. Sweep area to be painted 2. Sweep area to be painted loonie-sized amounts of paint. 3.Pour loonie-sized amounts of paint. 4.Stand on the stencil. 5.Carry wet stencil carefully. 6.Stay in view of painting crew. 7.Remain on sidewalks when delivering handbills- respect property. 8.Insert door hanger securely on doorknob, mailbox or screen door. 9.Record storm drains marked and handbills delivered.

Spread the Yellowfish Message… “What goes into a storm drain goes directly into a river, lake or stream and affects water quality”.
