Right Now… Secondary III students are taking the following courses: English French Math Science & Technology History Physical Education Art POP

Next year… The Reform will be entering Secondary IV (Cycle II Year 2) Changes have been made to the Secondary IV program.

What does this mean for graduation? Under the Reform, new graduation requirements have been established. A total of 54 credits at the Secondary IV or V level. At least 20 must be from Secondary V Including the following compulsory courses: Secondary V English Secondary V French Secondary IV Mathematics Secondary IV Science and Technology Secondary IV History and Citizenship Secondary IV Arts Secondary V Ethics and Religious Culture or Physical Education and Health

Mathematics There will be 3 different Mathematics courses available for Secondary IV students. Your placement in these classes will depend on your final Secondary III Math results (June mark + Exam mark). All Mathematics courses focus on the following competencies: To solve situational problems To reason mathematically To communicate mathematically The new Mathematics courses are: Cultural Math Technical Math Scientific Math

What is the difference? An overall pass (60%) in Mathematics 306 will lead you to the Cultural Math option. An overall average of 68% in Mathematics 306 and passing the final exam will lead you to the Technical Math option. An overall average of 75% in Mathematics 306 and passing the final exam will lead you to the Scientific Math option. Teacher recommendations will also be used for placement.

What is Cultural Math? Basic Math intended for students that like to: Design objects and activities Develop and participate in projects There is an emphasis on concrete and practical situations. Provides you with real life applications and tools Prepares you for: Studies in the Arts; Communications, Humanities and Social Sciences

What is Technical Math? Intended for students that like to: Explore situations that are manual and intellectual Explore different areas of study Prepares you for: Studies in Technical Fields related to Nutrition, Biology, Physics, Business Administration, Fine Arts, Graphic Arts

What is Scientific Math? Intended for students that: Seek to understand the origin of different phenomena, to explain them and to make decisions pertaining to them Develops concepts associated with algebra and geometry. Emphasis on activities related to science. Prepares students for: Studies in the hard sciences (health science / pure and applied) or research

If you are in Cultural Math… You will be considered an Arts student. Your course load will look like this: English French Math Science & Technology History & Citizenship Ethics & Religious Culture Physical Education & Health Fine Arts Option (Art or Dance or Drama) 1 Elective (Names and description to follow)

If you are a Technical or Scientific Math student… You can choose to be either an Arts or a Science student. If you choose to be an Arts student, your course load will be the same as a student in Cultural Math. If you choose to be a Science student but you have not achieved the requirements in June, you will be considered an Arts student.

If you choose to be a Science student… Your course load will look like this: English French Math Science & Technology History & Citizenship Ethics & Religious Culture Physical Education & Health Fine Arts (Art or Dance or Drama) 1 Elective (Science & Technology of the Environment – Description to follow) It is important to note that eligible students who do not choose to be a Science student will not be able to take Physics or Chemistry in Secondary V.

Secondary IV Electives… There are five electives open to Secondary IV students. They are: Entrepreneurship Spanish as a Third Language Word Processing I & II Media Arts Science & Technology of the Environment* (open to Science students only)

Elective #1: Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship is designed for the students interested in business. This course will introduce students to the many challenges of beginning a new business and the issues entrepreneurs face, such as: Introducing new products into the market Acquiring resources Obtaining financing Students will explore business theory, marketing, business success and failure. The course will result in the design of a formal business plan.

Elective #2: Spanish as a Third Language Students will develop three competencies: Communicates orally in Spanish Understands texts Writes texts

Elective #3: Word Processing I & II Students will be introduced to and fully explore different presentation software: Word Processing Spreadsheets Power Point The Internet will be the primary source of content. Students will learn different presentation formats: Letters Memos Reports Annotated essays CVs Mixed Media presentations

Elective #4: Media Arts Students will transform imagery and content using technological tools and methods. Elements of visual arts explored are: Photoshop Clay Animation Digital photography A digital camera will be used.

Elective #5: Science & Technology of the Environment Only Science students are able to take this elective. Students who want to take Physics / Chemistry in Secondary V must have taken this course. Explores the concept of environment; how elements interact with one another. The different elements of the environment, as well as the impact of science and technology, are the subject of scientific study. A particular emphasis is placed on citizenship and scientific skills.

If you are an Honours student… Students who are in the Honours group will see fewer changes in their schedules. The Honours course load will look like this: English French Math (526 or 536) History & Citizenship POP Chemistry Ethics & Religious Culture Physical Education & Health 1 Fine Arts option (Art or Dance or Drama)

Next year (2009 – 2010)… All Secondary V students will have 8 periods of electives. Science students will fill their electives with Physics & Chemistry. Arts students will fill their 8 periods with other electives that are yet to be determined.

IMPORTANT!!!! It is important to understand that students who are missing credits / courses after high school may make them up in CEGEP. This will result in the possibility of additional semester(s) in CEGEP.
