Putting your C.V. on-line! Making your cover letter into a Home Page! Make your information easy to find

Give your potential employer the information he wants to know Most resumés or C.V. ’s are standardized to make the employers job easier. Computer Scanning You can break the rules BUT think of what kind of image you want to project.

Information most resumés will have Personal Information Job Objective Education Employment Other Skills and Experience Interests References

Personal Information Where you live How to contact you – –fax –telephone The Personal Information Dilemma –how much information do you want to give out about yourself

Job Objective The job objective can be somewhat specific. Job objectives can be general and long term

Employment Jobs are listed most recent first but you don’t have to. The dilemma in ‘ Jobs ’ for most cegep students: –the skills learned on job approach Should you mention all your jobs or just the ones that are relevant to the job objective?

Other skills and experience What did you learn at your jobs Don ’t underestimate your skills or the value of the experience that you have gained. Have you won any awards? Are you bilingual or trilingual?

Interests The dilemma of interests

References Available upon request –Make sure they really are!

How is an on-line resumé different from a written resumé? The information can be organized much more effectively. The employer can skip large areas of information. The author can use links to provide in- depth information to interested potential employers.

The on-line resumé will not replace the hard copy An on-line resumé has features of the written resumé as well as features of the cover letter. A hard-copy version will be much more accessible during candidate selection as well as during interviews.

Cover Letters are not Home Pages A cover letter is addressed to a specific person or company A cover letter refers only to an enclosed resumé or C.V.

Home Pages are not Cover Letters A home page invites the reader to continue reading other pages in a web site. –It explains the nature of the information elsewhere in the web site. –It sets the tone graphically. –It provides direct links to other pages in the web site.

Home Pages are not Cover Letters 2 A home page is addressed to the general surfing public. –It can be less formal than a cover letter. –It reaches many types of readers. –It has to have more protected contact information.

Your Home Page is a surfer’s first glimpse at your work. It must effectively give them the information they need to decide if they will look further into your site. –Find the middle ground between brevity and verbosity.
