Congo Crisis 1960 U.N. peacekeeping mission by:J.P.
Background: -Congo gained independence from Belgium which lead to anarchy and war -as Congo gained independence, the Belgian Civilians were in state of panic as 100,000 Belgian Citizens were still living in Congo and in response Belgium sent paratroopers to Congo to protect Belgiam Civilians which was an illegal act because Congo was an illegal nation which all led to conflict -Such problems were also made when independence of Katanga was declared by Moise Tshombe who led the people of Katanga in the southern Congo -Katanga produced many of the earth's resources such as uranium, copper and diamonds -Since Katanga were rich and resourceful, the prime minister of Congo asked UN to attack the Katanga nation and crush Tshombe. -Since UN is a neutral nation and did not take sides Patrice Lumumba asked the USSR for help -In response the USSR gave Lumumba military weapons and Lumumba attacked Katanga which failed -Lumumba was dismissed from his position as the prime minister and in response he set up his own rival government in the east Congo -The UN was put into chaos and dilemma trying to keep peace in Congo
UN's role and aid -The United Nation responded to the Congo crisis by deploying men into the area -They stationed over 1800 troops, providing the largest deployment in the region. -The UN provided military support and also supplied food and medical supplies -Their role was to restore law, order and to stabilize the conflict and to keep other nation out of the conflict
Outcome of the mission How did it end? -Conflict officially ended with a peace deal in 2002 Is it still an issue?yes -The war caused many deaths and the aftermath of the war is still causing death to some people even today Was it successful?yes and no -The UN were successful at saving many people through medical and military support and also keeping other nations out of the war even though the whole process almost caused the UN bankruptcy
