 Disengagement at its best

Round Pegs in Square Holes. Think Different! ….going the distance since 1981

IN CANADA: On an average day… 60 babies are born to teen moms. 4,000 juveniles are incarcerated. 295 teens are criminally charged. 434 youth gangs are active. 1 teen commits suicide. 205 teens use toxins before class. 274 students drop out of school.

IN THE ALTERNATE SCHOOL: On an average day… Some students are taking care of their newborn babies. Some students are on a “time-out”: Doing therapy in drug rehabilitation, serving a sentence in the judicial system or working to help to pay the bills. Some students’ behaviors are surfacing in Core classrooms. Some students are reading at a Grade 3-4 level. Some students are doing Math with a dictionary. Some students are struggling with the heavy workload. Some students are enrolling in the school.

How “Me” Becomes “We” at The Alternate School.

BELIEFS OF TAS: Since 1981 All students: are trying to achieve in some capacity. are capable of learning. are partners with the staff. are in school because they want to be. are deserving of dignity, safety & respect. are able to implement common sense & learn from failure.

BALLROOM DANCING: Putting our Best Foot Forward!

 VOLUNTEER WORK: Helping the Community

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in square holes….

The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules and they have no respect for the status quo.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify them or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.

Because they change things, they invent, they imagine, they heal, they explore, they create, they inspire. They push the human race forward.

Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?

While some see them as crazy ones, we see genius because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do. Think different.

 TAS: Still Going the Distance…
