Nephi’s Courage 1. The Lord commanded Nephi to go and get the plates From the wicked Laban inside the city gates. Laman and Lemuel were both afraid to try. Nephi was courageous. This was his reply: 2. The Lord commanded Nephi to go and build a boat. Nephi’s older brothers believed it would not float. Laughing and mocking, they said he should not try. 3. The Lord gives us commandments and asks us to obey. Sometimes I am tempted to choose another way. When I’m discouraged, and think I cannot try, I will be courageous, and I will reply: “I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands. I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey. I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands. I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey.” Words and music: Bill N. Hansen Jr., b. 1952, and Lisa T. Hansen, b. 1958 © 1986 by Wilford N. Who can briefly tell the story from last week’s lesson of Nephi’s broken bow and how Nephi obtained food for his family?

Here is a drawing of a ship. Write a list of materials you think you would need to build a ship large and strong enough to carry you and your family across the ocean.

What kind of help would you need to build a ship? Where could you go to learn how to build a ship? We are going to learn how Heavenly Father helped Nephi build a ship.

Heavenly Father Commands Nephi to Build a Ship “Lesson 6: Heavenly Father Commands Nephi to Build a Ship,” Primary 4: Book of Mormon, (1997),19 “Building the Ship,” Book of Mormon Stories, Chapter 7, pgs. 21 & 22

After Lehi’s family had camped by the sea for many days, the Lord spoke to Nephi. He told Nephi to build a ship to carry his family to the promised land.

Nephi did not know how to make a ship, but the Lord said he would show him. He told Nephi where to find metal to make the tools he would need.

Laman and Lemuel made fun of Nephi for wanting to build a ship. They did not believe that the Lord had shown Nephi how to do it. They refused to help.

Nephi told Laman and Lemuel to repent and not be rebellious. He reminded them that they had seen an angel. He also told them that God has the power to do all things.

Laman and Lemuel were angry with Nephi and wanted to throw him into the sea. As they came toward Nephi, he commanded them not to touch him because he was filled with the power of God.

Laman and Lemuel were afraid for many days. Then the Lord told Nephi to touch Laman and Lemuel. When Nephi did, the Lord shocked them. Laman and Lemuel knew the power of God was with Nephi.

Nephi told Laman and Lemuel to obey their parents and obey God. Nephi said if they would do this, they would be blessed.

Laman and Lemuel repented and helped Nephi build the ship. Nephi went to the mountain many times to pray for help. The Lord taught him how to build the ship.

When Nephi and his brothers had finished building the ship, they knew it was a good ship. They thanked God for helping them.

Discussion Time!

What does the Lord promise if we obey his commandments? Let’s read 1 Nephi 17:3 How have you and your family been blessed because of your obedience?

Why did the Lord command Nephi to build a ship? Let’s read 1 Nephi 17:8 How did Nephi respond to this command? Let’s read 1 Nephi 17:9

What gave Nephi such great confidence? Let’s read 1 Nephi 17:14–15 Why do you think the Lord did not just give them a ship?

Why did Laman and Lemuel not want to help Nephi build a ship? Let’s read 1 Nephi 17:17–19, 45–46 How would working together make building the ship easier?

How would you feel if your older brothers made fun of you because you were keeping Heavenly Father’s commandments? How have you been able to help your family? How have you felt when you have helped your family or have not helped your family?

What did Heavenly Father give Nephi power to do when his brothers tried to kill him? Let’s read 1 Nephi 17:48, 54

How did Nephi show his faith in Jesus Christ? Let’s read 1 Nephi 17:50–51 How can you be like Nephi and show courage and faith in Jesus Christ?

Divide into two groups! Listen for what the Lord promises when we are obedient: One group will read 1 Nephi 17:3 in unison. The other group read 1 Nephi 3:7 in unison. We will be blessed if we keep the commandments and ask Heavenly Father for guidance. Enr. Act. 1

Let’s memorize 1 Nephi 17:3, beginning with “And if it so be” and ending with “he has commanded them.” “If it so be that the children of men keep the commandments of God he doth nourish them, and strengthen them, and provide means whereby they can accomplish the thing which he has commanded them” Enr. Act. 2

I need another volunteer! I need a volunteer! Please open the jar using only one hand. I need another volunteer! Please help your friend who is only using one hand. Enr. Act. 3

Tasks are usually easier to do when we work together. What about family goals, such as having regular family home evenings, family prayer, and family scripture study? How can you help your family achieve these goals? Enr. Act. 3

Let’s make a list! What things could you do to help your family learn more about the gospel and keeping the commandments? Choose one thing you would like to work on improving during the coming week. Enr. Act. 4

What are some similarities between Lehi and his family’s journey and the children of Israel’s wandering in the wilderness? (see 1 Nephi 17:22–46). Enr. Act. 5

What can we learn from these experiences? Enr. Act. 5

Each of you can set a good example in your family. I bear testimony that we and our families are blessed when we keep the commandments.
