2011 MBBS Honours Oral Presentation of your Project Plan Year 3 Honours Workshop 3B A/Prof Di Eley MBBS Research Coordinator

Overview of Workshop Purpose  Aim Requirements of Oral Presentation  What to include Assessment Scheduling of individual presentations A few tips on power point presentations Presenting your Research Plan – Dr Zhang

Purpose Demonstrate that you ;  Have chosen a research topic, and a supervisor  Can generate a focussed research question (RQ)  Can rationalise a need for your project, and have thought about how you will go about answering your RQ.  Outline your project plan, including your design and how your methodology will answer your RQ  Can discuss the ethical considerations that may be associated with your planned research  Can explain clearly and defend research information through oral presentation

Aim To increase your oral presentation skills and your ability to convey a summary of your project plan. You do not need to have all the details of your research confirmed. You do need to demonstrate that you have thought about all aspects of your research (ethics, timeframe) and/or identified possible problems that may arise (adequate sample size, access to data).

Format of the Oral Presentation  Speak for 10 minutes – ONLY! Please practice this – you will be cut off if overtime Demonstrates ability to convey your points concisely No written component is required  Followed immediately by up to 5 minutes of questions or comments from the examiners and audience.  Three Examiners for every presentation  Power point available (suggested) Send electronically to Skye prior to your presentation  You and your Supervisor will receive your marks and all written feedback asap afterwards  Everyone is welcome – please support one another and invite anyone you wish to attend

Requirements: Oral Presentation Your presentation should include a brief discussion of the following components; The working title and subject area of the project A clear statement of the research question and/or hypothesis The rationale for choosing the topic and why the question needs to be answered  You may bring some literature into this but only that which is relevant to justify your rationale An outline of the proposed research design and the rationale for the choosing the design A statement on some of the ethical considerations of your project A statement on the intended outcomes of the project

Assessment Honours Handbook Appendix 2, pages marking criteria on a 1-7 scale – No weightings 1-2 = Fail; 3 = Fail limited; 4 = Adequate; 5 = Proficient; 6 = Substantial work; 7 = Outstanding Plus overall comments & feedback

Assessment Criteria 2 The ethical considerations that may be associated with the planned research are clearly stated and there is brief discussion on how these considerations will be addressed in the project

Assessment Criteria 3 There is a clear rationale for the choice of topic and why the question needs to be answered. This should be supported with brief reference to key literature in the area.

Assessment Criteria 4 The proposed project design is outlined and justified. The intended outcomes of the project are clearly stated.

Assessment Criteria 5 Quality of presentation, i.e.:  Good speaking manner, good communication style to the audience;  Slides are clear concise, not overcrowded;  Kept to time limit

Presentation Schedule  Between 27 April and 5 May 2011, from 5-7pm  20 minutes time slots 10 minutes talk, 5 minutes Q&A, 5 minutes changeover  You will be contacted with a presentation time ONLY if you have a ‘valid’ reason will you be rescheduled  Remote Students: If you know are currently living outside of Brisbane (Med Soc Rotation or at the RCS), please contact us now and let us know  Skye To:

The Bottom Line……………… The writing/work you do for this presentation will help both your literature review and methodology submissions. You want the audience to ‘understand’ what your project is about, your topic, your RQ and why it is important and some of the intended outcomes of your work. Leave your audience feeling interested in what you are going to do and confident that you can do it.

A few tips on PowerPoint presentations Your slides – what are they for? To help you get your story across to the audience Help your audience stay focused & interested in your topic The slide IS NOT the presentation The slide is ‘Summary of concepts’ Aim for a slide a minute – no more! 10 minute talk = 10 slides Keep it simple
