Podiatrists Are health professionals trained to deal with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs. Have to successfully complete a 4 year Bachelor of Science degree to meet registration requirements. Must be registered with the Podiatrists Registration Board (Victoria) in order to be able to practice.

Employment Podiatrists work in a number of settings Private Practice Public Health settings (Community Health Centres, Hospitals, High Risk Foot clinics) Education Aged Care facilities Footwear companys

Podiatry in Aged Care General Foot care Neurological assessments Vascular assessments Dermatological assessments Footwear examinations, fitting, modifications, recommendations and supply Manufacture and supply of insoles Education for Personal Care workers Development of Care Plans

Clinical Environment recommendations Adequate space (3m x3m) Vinyl floor covering Strong lighting Suitable chair / plinth Trolley Hand washing facilities Powerpoints Provide assistants / assistance when necessary.

Clinical information recommendations Ensure Podiatrist has a copy of or access to clients medical history prior to treatment. Ensure any specific issues are clearly identified in notes or via referral form Provide list of other health practitioners who also visit the facility for cross referral if necessary.

How to engage a Podiatrist Advertise position or contact a podiatrist who has been recommended to you Outline the scope of the work you would like them to do. Invite them to inspect the facilities and treatment room Discuss remuneration (sessional rates, hourly rate, per consultation rate, EPC, DVA etc) and schedule of visits Ask them to submit copy of current registration certificate and insurance certificate. Develop contract of engagement.
