Queensland University of Technology CRICOS No J Successfully Speaking workshop Professor Kunle Oloyede, PhD., DIC Director Higher Degrees Research School of Chemistry Physics and Mechanical Engineering

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R To speak successfully Plan Practise Provide 3-Ps

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Planning = Questions and Analysis What do I want to say? Content Analysis What benefits to audience? Who is my Audience? Purpose - Why? Should they listen to me? Structure of slides/talk

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Why do you want to speak? To let people know about your thinking and approach to an important problem To engage with people and get feedback To Publish and enhance you career To learn how to present for your next destination, e.g., a job To impart knowledge To act as change agent (for a cause)

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Actions to take for conferences Effective preparation and iterations Controlled Breathing especially before you get on stage First few sentences or moments might be a problem – Don’t worry it happens to all Keep telling yourself that you have prepared well Look at the audience and shift your eyes across the room

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Actions to take for journal publication What is the philosophical argument? What is my hypothesis – does it suit the forum? What knowledge does it create? Who might review your paper/confirmation document? Does your abstract tell it all? What are my results saying to the experts and non-experts in the field – Have I reported my findings effectively? – ask a colleague

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Paper Structure Abstract must tell it all Each paragraph must begin a new component and end with a closure statement Each paragraph must lead to the next for continuity Results are not the same as discussion – one is your finding the other is what you make of it philosophically!

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Most important Know your subject Know your audience Know your publisher/journal/conference Arrange so that the most important issues are addressed as soon as possible Practise, do a lot of iterations Be prepared for hard work
