MATHS GAMES

SPACES FOR GAME PLAYING Make use of different spaces to play maths games. Partition off a section of the classroom for floor sitting. A group of students could play a game directly outside the classroom. Remember to have an adult supervise or keep the students within eyesight of the teacher.

CHESS Chess is a game of strategy. Students can learn this game from a very young age. Chess clubs during the lunch hour help develop the skills of strategy. Competitions can also be played in rounds. This game is particularly useful to extend bright students but it also helps everyone develop these skills.

DICE GAMES Dice games are simple, few materials are needed and many maths strategies can be reinforced: Addition. Subtraction. Multiplication. Probability. Place Value.

TANGRAMS Tangrams have a variety of uses: teachers can make up set shape cards progressively getting harder by drawing around the outline of the shape; students are asked to make up set shapes or objects; students can be creative and use their imagination; patterns i.e. a, b, c, a, b, c, OR three sided shape, four sided shape, five sided shapes.

BOTTLE CAPS Place value. Skip counting. Patterning and sequencing. Rounding. Greater than and less than. Addition and subtraction. Number ordering.

PLACE VALUE GAMES Place value needs to be reinforced so students have a sound understanding of numbers to millions. Numbers are not just digits, they have meaning. Without this understanding students cannot perform any operations.
