El Niño and La Niña are weather conditions where the weather is warmer or cooler than normal. El Niño is when it is warmer than normal. La Niña is when it is colder than normal. Both of these can cause a global change in our weather. NOAA's El Niño Page 5/3/2013

El Niño and La Niña are caused by the water near the equator to warm or cool more than it usually does. This causes the air to gain or lose heat. This air travels to land and brings us weather that can cause floods, drought, or snow. El Niño can sometimes be caused by underwater volcanoes that warm the water. Answers to La Niña Frequently Asked Questions 11/13/98

El Niño and La Niña typically last about 9-12 months. It isn’t uncommon however for multi- year La Niña to occur. Answers to La Niña Frequently Asked Questions 11/13/98 When do El Niño and La Niña events occur? © Copyright Commonwealth of Australia 2013, Bureau of Meteorology when.shtml

El Niño and La Niña usually occur in late fall to early winter. They start to weaken during summer. When do El Niño and La Niña events occur? © Copyright Commonwealth of Australia 2013, Bureau of Meteorology when.shtml

In Bolivia, storm related floods killed about fifty people and cost the country about three hundred million American dollars. Another case in Indonesia killed about three hundred forty people and cost Indonesia about five hundred million American dollars. Economic Effects associated with El Niño 5/2/2013

 El Niño means “Little Boy”.  La Niña means “Little Girl”.  El Niño occurs twice as often as La Niña  They do not have to occur one after the other. Answers to La Niña Frequently Asked Questions 11/13/98 El Nino and La Nina 5/2/2013
