Iwo Jima and Okinawa By: Leah Fechko

Overview Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The U.S was going to try and take over Japan. However, they had to defeat the islands, known as island hoping. Two of the main ones were Iwo Jima and Okinawa. So, the U.S went after both those islands. U.S clearly was winning but, Japanese fight until death. Later creating the use of atomic bombs.

Who? The U.S went to fight Iwo Jima to try and take over their island. Then went to fight Okinawa to take over their island

When? This took place February 19 th -March 26 th of 1945 This took place April 1 st -June 22 nd of 1945

Where? Was taken place on Iwo Jima Then, was taken place on Okinawa

Why? The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the U.S wanted to retaliate to get them back

Significance to the War These two battles are significant to the war because Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the U.S wanted to get them back.. American leaders agreed that they could not sacrifice so many lives; the only viable alternative was the atomic bomb. Atomic bombs ended the war.

Navajo code talkers help end the war Navajo troops played a vital role in the Pacific island-hoping campaign. Using a code based on their own language-which was a mystery to the Japanese. Navajo radio operators sent critical messages from island to island.
