Introduction to Computer Internship Unit 1

Basic Networking Concepts Goal: Understand basic concepts and terminology associated with computer networking Unit 1

Network Concepts Outline Communication Lines Protocols & Packets Routing & Bridging Services Client Computers & LANs Unit 1

Basic Terms Local Area Network (LAN): A computer network limited to the immediate area, usually the same building Wide Area Network (WAN): A computer network that covers a large geographic area Unit 1

Who You Should Know Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF): The Internet “standards” committee http://www.ietf.org/ Unit 1

Communication Lines Used to connect you LAN to the world Typically leased from a telecommunications company Think of as a “pipe” Examples include telephone line, ISDN, 56KB, T1, fiber optic Unit 1

Protocols & Packets Packets are “chunks of data” that are transmitted on a communication line Protocols are the languages spoken by a computer on a network Unit 1

Routing A router is a device connected between a LAN and a WAN that directs packets to multiple communication lines and devices “Routing” is the act of directing packets Unit 1

Servers & Services A Server is a computer system that performs various operations for the whole network A Server performs Services such as Web publishing, E-mail, filtering, and news. Unit 1

Client Computers & LANs Client computers are the desktop systems that users (people) use They use the network Services They must be connected to a LAN that can support the desired protocol Unit 1
