INDIA’S RELIGIONS

HINDUISM Hinduism is one of the oldest religions in the world today. The Aryans brought this religion to the Indian subcontinent. They believe that many gods and goddesses control the forces of nature and other earthly forces. The universal spirit is called the Brahman.

Every year, thousands of Hindus go to the Ganges River to wash away their sins and purify themselves. The Ganges is the source of life for them and they believe that it has healing and spiritual powers.

HINDUISM CONTINUED Hinduism teaches that every living thing has a soul that needs to be reintroduced to the Brahman after it dies. They believe that a soul must pass through many lives before they can reach Brahman. This idea is called reincarnation. Whether or not Hindus come closer to Brahman depends on their karma (how much good they have done in their lives.)

Siddharta Guatama Born around 563 B.C. Born in the present country of Nepal He was wealthy, happily married, and had a new son. As he traveled he came across some poor people and he felt sorry for them. He wanted to know why people suffered and so he prayed and fasted for many days. He eventually found the answer and it became Buddhism.

BUDDHISM Buddhism is based on the teachings of Siddharta Guatama Buddhist try and reach nirvana. They do this by giving up all desires. If a person follows The Four Noble Ttuths, and also the Eightfold Path they may indeed reach nirvana.
