Mathew Thomas, C.Eng., FIMechE, FIEAust., CPEng. Chairman, “The Way Forward to Chartered Engineer Status through IMechE Membership” Mathew Thomas, C.Eng., FIMechE, FIEAust., CPEng. Chairman, IMechE Cawangan Malaysia

The IMechE Who we are Classes of membership Benefits of membership How to become Registered Questions and Answers Literature Explain the structure of the evening and the information that I will be covering Ask for questions at the end but if any points are not clear then please feel free to ask for clarification as I go along There is a great deal of literature available so make sure you pick up the relevant information before you go.

A reminder of who we are What is the IMechE? IMechE is: A chartered professional engineering body Registered with the Engineering Council The mission statement is to: ‘…create the natural professional home for all involved in Mechanical Engineering’

Profile of the Institution IM Profile of the Institution founded in 1847 by George Stephenson over 80,000 members in 120 countries international organisation based in the UK We are a charity. A non-profit making body, so any money we get in membership fees or entry to events and talks all goes back into providing improved member facilities. Established in the middle of the 19th century when mechanical engineering was a new and emerging technology. No common standards existed so the Institution was set up provide them. A safeguard of standard for future years. a learned society a guardian of standards a voice for the profession

Profile of a Chartered Engineer Exercises independent technical judgement and decision making Is dedicated to creativity, innovation and continuous improvement Accepts complexity and minimises ambiguity Has professional and personal integrity Explain what we mean by a description of a Chartered Engineer. Amplify bullet points. By professional integrity, we mean that the person will abide by the code of conduct of the Institution. Quote example of IEE members who tried to electrocute his wife but failed. The membership committee considered if trying to kill his wife was a breach of the code, but decided, however distasteful, it was not. However, as a professional Electrical Engineer who had tried to electrocute her and failed…..

Profile of a Chartered Engineer Can adapt to rapid change May have direct responsibility for professional & technical staff Plays a key role in wealth creation Takes an active part in the training and development of young engineers

Profile of an Incorporated Engineer Part of the mainstream of professional engineering and a practitioner of today’s technology Performs complex technical duties of an established or novel nature in a wide variety of contexts Has a substantial degree of personal responsibility or authority

Profile of an Incorporated Engineer Combines a practical approach with detailed understanding of a particular technology Maintains and manages existing technology efficiently Is aware of the relationship between technical responsibility in business and the external professional environment.

Professional Registration with the IMechE CEng and IEng are very different qualifications, but with equal importance to industry and the Institution. Inclusion of IEng broadens the IMechE membership base, raising its profile and expanding its influence Regular feedback shows a need for a more integrated IMechE membership

Your Road to Professional Registration Review the IMechE's requirements Obtain the necessary Academic qualifications Achieve the required period of Responsible Experience Demonstrate competence as a Professional Engineer at the Professional Review Interview There are a number of very clear steps that you need to go through to become a corporate member Explain about the four stages which we see as being central (including interview as the final stage)

Routes to Professional Registration Fellow C Eng / I Eng FIMechE Member C Eng / I Eng MIMechE Associate AMIMechE Explain the various stages involved in getting to CEng. But is that 1 years experience 20 years ago which has been repeated over and over. CPD ensures engineers keep up to date.

Membership provides Involvement in development of the profession Enhanced employment opportunities "Professional Engineering" magazine mailed out every 2 weeks Other specialist publications Available through... The IMechE website: www.imeche.org.uk Your fast link to all that IMechE offers

Membership provides Enhanced professional opportunities for career advancement, through networking events and regular listings of advertised jobs in Professional Engineering magazine and the PE website. The opportunity to apply for the European designation Eur Ing (CEng only).

Why employ Professional Engineers? Increased credibility with customers and suppliers A culture of creativity, innovation and continuous improvement leading to… Enhanced business opportunities, increased competitiveness and a network of technical and social contacts Refer to Cooper Camerons experience - now part of their way of working that an “engineer” has to be a graduate and moving towards being part of professional institution. Ford and Rolls Royce insist on Chartered Status to achieve a certain level of seniority as an engineer Refer to clients demanding that as part of contract negotiation the managing person on a project be chartered..
