Lemelson MIT, Binney Smith 2/28/11,

Invention: Crayola Crayons Crayola brand crayons were the first kids crayons ever made. The Crayola crayon boxes were sold for just a nickel. The name Crayola means “oily chalk.” In 1972, fluorescent colors were added to meet popular demand. in 1987 Crayola washable markers and colored pencils were introduced and were an instant hit with kids, moms, and teachers.

Inventor: Edward Binney and Harold Smith Edward and Harold founded the Binney And Smith Inc. in the late 1800’s They specialized in industrial colorings. Later they began to make slate pencils for students. Edward and Harold won a gold medal at the St. Louis world Exhibition in 1902 for their invention of the first dustless chalk. Binney and Smith used a combination of paraffin wax and industrial pigments to create crayons that were kid friendly.
