The Union tried an all out attack that failed and alerted the Southern infantry. The Union fired the first shot.

UNION CONFEDERACY  2,331 soldiers  15,067 soldiers

 Nathan Bradford Forrest escaped with supplies and 500 men.

 U.S Grant launched two unsuccessful probing attack.  Flag man Foote was wounded during a gunboat attack on the water batteries, but there was a bloody repulse.

 The Confederates attempted to break out and escape to Nashville, Tennessee.
