FE-HE Articulation: a case study of work in progress Karen MacFarlane Centre for Research in Lifelong Learning Glasgow Caledonian University

The Extent of HE Provision in Scottish FECs FE colleges are now major providers of higher education in Scotland The numbers of students participating in HE programmes in FECs has increased by 141% between 1985/86 and 2000/01 34% of all undergraduate level students in Scotland were enrolled in FE colleges in 2000/01 –21% of full-time students –61% of part-time students

The project Funding from SHEFC in recognition of the University’s current success in terms of numbers of students articulating from FECs: over 800 students entered into levels 2 or 3 of GCU degrees through the HNC/D route last year, over 20% of our undergraduate intake To encourage further development and innovation in articulation links with FE Extensive consultation within GCU, with students, and with colleges has resulted in the development of a multi- strand project

Five main strands 1. Subject-based transition 2. Mentoring pilot 3. Access to the professions: health care 4. Disability 5. Research and evaluation
