Dr Julie Hulme Discipline Lead for Psychology Embedding psychological literacy in the undergraduate curriculum

To consider barriers and opportunities to embedding psychological literacy and/or psychologically literate citizenship in your teaching; To start action planning for your own teaching or curriculum; To share ideas and practice. 2 Aims

What are the barriers to embedding psychological literacy in the curriculum? What are the opportunities arising from embedding psychological literacy in the curriculum? Write one idea per post-it note and organise like this: 3 Barriers and opportunities Barriers – teachingOpportunities – teaching Barriers - assessmentOpportunities - assessment

Links very strongly to graduate attributes: Working and living in a global society – global citizenship; Ethical principles; Employability; Problem solving skills and flexibility to engage with novel situations. Engages students with real-life applications, showing them the relevance of their subject. Bringing Psychology to life and life to Psychology….? 4 Opportunities

Preparing graduates for jobs that do not yet exist Using knowledge that isn’t yet known And technology that hasn’t been invented. Preparing students for life? 5 Psychological literacy – what does it do?

What will you do? How will you do it? Teaching and assessment issues? CPD issues? What human and other resources are needed? What sign off is needed? What is the timeline? What challenges and opportunities are involved? How will you and your teams ensure constructive alignment? 6 What next?

To develop psychological literacy in our students, we need to model it as academics, for example: Learning and teaching using psychological principles; Problem solving; Interactions with students; Inclusivity. (McGovern, 2011). 7 What are the issues?

To what extent are you fluent in your own psychological literacy? Your colleagues? What is the best idea you’ve heard or had today? How will you overcome any challenges you’ve identified? What change will you make to your own practice? Any questions for the speakers or for each other? 8 Discussion
