HISTORY The ethnic makeup is mestizo 90%, white 9%, Amerindian 1% The Spanish conquistadors severely reduced the Amerindian population Unfair distribution of land. In 1930 there was a massacre of 30,000 mostly Amerindian Salvadorans after a peasant uprising against landowners called “La Matanza.”
