What Is a Rate? Example: I can run 12 miles in 2 hours. A ratio with two different units: Examples: Miles/hour (mph) Feet per second Dollar per pound Dollars per hour Example: I can run 12 miles in 2 hours.

Unit Rates How are unit rates different than other rates? Still compare two different units but the second value in the ratio is simplified to one. Ex: 40 miles/one hour $2 per pound Decide which unit you want to be the single unit and write it on the bottom of your ratio. Then divide. Be sure both units are included in your answer. Example: I can run 12 miles in 2 hours. 12 miles/2 hours = 6 miles/hour
