Cedar Rapids Casino By: Marty Francksen

Problem Local investor group wants to build a casino in Linn County. Other Iowa casino owners don’t want a casino in Linn County.

Location of Casino

Pros Will create more than 600 jobs. Will give a boost to Cedar Rapids’ riverfront across from downtown. Keep gambling dollars spent by Linn County residents in Linn County. Provide business for the city-owned hotel and convention complex.

Cons It’s not a real economic development and comes with more costs in crime and social problems than benefits. Will not deliver all the jobs promised and will hurt existing restaurants and bars. Has been rushed at voters with too little public debate.

Solution Make the casino smaller so it won’t make a huge difference on other casino’s revenue.
