Nutrients in Food By Matthew Schembri

Carbohydrate These nutrients can also be called sugars. Carbohydrates or (carbs) will provide energy to the body. In fact it is said that they are primary energy source of the body.

Vitamins Vitamins are nutreints that help the body to function grow, repair and remain healty. Vitamins are usually with letters like Vitamin A and Vitamin C but they also have a chemical name ex. Carotene and citric acid. Vitamins may be catagorized in two.

Minerals The general function of minerals is that they help the body to function/work properly. Minerals will dissolve in water. Differents minerals are found in different foods. Examples of minerals Calcium is a micronutrient (that is, one needs this mineral in higher quantities than 100mg/0.1g daily. Calcium is good for bones and teeth. Iron is important for blood as it transports oxygen. Potassium keeps muscles and nerves working property. Zinc helps the immune system (is the system that fights diseases). Zinc is a micronutrient which means that one must take less than 100mg of this minerals daily.

Fibres Fibre is the indigestible part of plant food. Fibre help to keep the intestinal tract clean. As it absorbs water and so it becomes gelatinous (like a jelly). It also gives bulk (it gives volume and makes the stool/feaces more solid)

Fats Fats are a very important nutrient which is very needed in small amounts. The functions of fat are to provide energy, insulation (keep the body warm) and protection to organs. Fats are made of fatty acids and glyceral. Animal fats which are solid and plant fats which are liquids known as oils.
