Public Health Intelligence Gareth Wrench Senior Public Health Intelligence Analyst/Epidemiologist Name… From PHIT… Slightly different tack from other pres – relatively new team – only limited achievements at moment. However, recently established unique set-up with links back to WCC – well placed to deliver on some of key proposals raised in White Papers. Going to give brief overview of team, explain working arrangements & talk about types of work recently completed & projects we’ll be working on in the future…

Overview Role of Public Health Intelligence New unique team & working arrangements! Outcomes/Benefits 3 things want you to know about PHI. 1. Role & Importance of PHI What we do & why! Types of work involved in – how they’re used 2. New team set-up & explain working arrangements How the team’s come about & how we operate / organise ourselves / mention work prog 3. Outcomes & Benefits to both NHSW & WCC as a result of new team setup & joint work programme

Role of PHI: What we do! Statistical data analysis & interpretation JSNA, DPH report, Health Needs Assessment, Impact Assessments, Equity Audits, Profiling, Performance Review Epidemiological research Surveillance, Questionnaires & Surveys, Audits, Evidence Spatial analysis GIS mapping, Local Information System Intelligence not information! Backbone of Public Health work! Firstly, in terms of role of PHI & what we do… Statistical analysis & interpretation. Putting figures into context so they can be used by commissioners/policy-makers to make informed evidence-based decisions. - Provided analysis for JSNA / DPH Report / produce range of Health NAs & IAs Epidemiological research – study of factors affecting health & illness of populations - incidence of disease/prevalence rates/wider determinants of health, e.g. socio-econ factors - Health surveillance activity, consultation – to establish comprehensive & robust health evidence base. Geographical spatial analysis - GIS – not prev. been used extensively within PCT! Identification of geog. hotspots, pres of geog. data, thematic mapping - LIS - allowing greater access to data via interactive online tools Intelligence not information – adding value to data via careful analysis & interpretation. Telling a story… Making data available in meaningful way – easily understandable Without wanting to sound too self-righteous & to use medical analogy! Backbone of PH – intelligence/interpretation provided should underpin all decisions. Fundamental in allocating/prioritising finite resources – deciding areas to target Importance of sound/good quality evidence & intelligence, flagged up by the PH White Paper!

The Team New unique team: Employed by NHSW and seconded to Warwickshire Observatory Responsible to Warwickshire Observatory Manager & Consultant in Public Health Integrated Work Programme Observatory Hub in Westgate House Different to other team’s in PH - Newly formed team - all 4 team members only been together for just over a month! Unique & different way of working – employed by NHSW but secondment arrangement with WO at WCC Excellent links already in place with WCC via Obs – joint working developed over last couple of years – formation of team - culmination of this - obviously a benefit with PH now moving to LA – stand us in good stead for future! Unique arrangement – ahead of the game in terms of PH White Paper. One of the first in the country! In terms of how we operate - Responsible to WO Manager (AD) & Consultant in PH (RR) In process of developing detailed joint work programme Also establishing WO hub in Westgate House with access to both NHS & WCC networks/systems

Work Programme Joint Strategic Needs Assessment Director of Public Health Annual Report Other Needs Assessment work e.g. Mental Health Needs Assessment Local Information System (LIS) Data Sharing e.g. to include in pupil forecasting GP Practice Profiles National Child Measurement Programme Analysis Vital Statistics Monitoring Fuel Poverty Research Health Inequalities Ad hoc research/requests And many more… To give you a flavour of projects featuring in our work programme / to illustrate breadth of our work & joint working. Just mention selection - 2 main ‘flagship’ projects… JSNA – trying to kick start the process/full refresh – with development of structured programme of work & LIS. Lead JSNA working group - Co-ordinating role. Paper - ‘Future of JSNA - Developing our Approach’ DPH Report – Recently completed on Older People – now about to start next year’s on a different topic! Incorporated analytical input & mapping from Obs. Other NA work, e.g. Mental Health NA, Sexual Health NA, Child Poverty NA LIS - to support JSNA – enable interested parties to access/interrogate data Data Sharing - Facilitated data sharing agreement with CYPF - enabled transfer of detailed school age popn data - formed part of a pupil forecasting model. GP Practice Profiles – interactive online tool - profiling broad range of clinical/demographic patient data NCMP – detailed analysis of reception age & year 6 children classed as overweight/obese – to inform prioritising/targeting Data/research requests – averaging 12 a month but increasing! Wide range of requests on everything from dementia to diabetes! Wide audience.

Links to Warwickshire Observatory Benefits: More ‘joined-up’ way of working Better access to datasets held within NHSW & WCC Less duplication Shared expertise Shared evidence base Better position to deliver the White Papers e.g. JSNA In terms of links to Obs – number of key, mutual benefits More ‘joined-up’/integrated way of working – collaborating on projects e.g. JSNA, DPH report, other NAs, & other projects where health context needed Less duplication – e.g. general contextual info/demography/deprivation Shared expertise – in terms of research methods, statistical knowledge, interpretation of data, pres of data – various econs of scale in operating like this! Developing shared & consistent evidence base - Better access to more data & intelligence for both organisations – ensuring consistent messages provided to policy-makers. Establishing a single point of contact for R&I in Warks. Emphasis on importance of evidence, underpinning needs assessment, influencing decision-making & commissioning decisions Better placed to deliver aims of White Paper on Projects, e.g. JSNA
