ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP)

WHAT IS AP? AP allows motivated high school students to take university-level courses while still in high school 34 courses in 21 subject areas taught by high school teachers courses developed by committees of university professors and experienced AP teachers exams are written in May at the student’s school each exam is 50% multiple choice / 50 % free response

WHY OFFER AP? Advanced Placement Programs add an additional opportunity for schools to “reach every student” by: supporting students in obtaining advanced placement, a credit and increased options at university as well as helping students stand out in admissions process and international recognition; promoting enrichment and challenge; enhancing individual student strengths; increasing strategies for active learning; providing more specific preparation for university exams and projects.

Successful completion of an Advanced Placement Examination can result in advanced placement (university transfer credit), program admission, or both, depending on the university a student chooses to attend. Students who enter university having taken an AP course regularly claim to be more confident in and prepared for their university studies. AP courses are recognized by 90% of postsecondary institutions in North America and in over 600 universities in 60 other countries around the world. An AP course is not a prerequisite in any university program in North America.
