Presentation transcript:

Based on the Novel, Hatchet, by: Gary Paulsen

I chose the hatchet as the most important item in my survival kit, because the hatchet can do many things. It can make fire, like Brian did. Also, it can work as a knife, scare away animals, and it can kill animals and skin them. Brian also used the hatchet to carve weapons, such as an arrow and a bow, to catch fish and other animals.

Water is my second most important item, because if I don’t have a lake or a river, I will need fresh water to live. I can live without food for about 1 week or so, but without water, I can’t live for more than 3 days. Brian was able to survive, because he had a freshwater lake right in front of his shelter. If he didn’t have a freshwater lake right in front of him, he would not have survived the crash. I can store the water in a can if I have one.

Insect repellent is the third item on my list, because when I’m in the wild with no protection, I can get bitten by harmful insects which can cause some unknown diseases. Some diseases can kill me. Brian had a hard time fighting the mosquitoes, because he didn’t have insect repellent.

An emergency transmitter is ranked 4 th on my list, because the transmitter could save me anytime when I’m lost. When a plane passes my transmitter, and hears the beep, I could be located. Brian was able to go home, because of the emergency transmitter’s help. If he had not found the emergency transmitter in the survival kit and left it on by mistake, he would not have been rescued. The GPS in the transmitter helped the pilot find him.

I would put matches as 5 th on my list, because if I have a hard time making fire with the hatchet, I could just use a match. Simple as that! Also, I could scare away animals by lighting the match and following them. Brian would had have an easier time making fire if he had a match in his possession.

The 6 th item on my list will be cookware. I chose cookware, because it would allow me to cook very cleanly. I could also use it to hold water. I would not be able to cook with water without some sort of pot or pan. Brian didn’t cook food, he roasted it. This happened, because Brian didn’t have a container to hold water. A pot or pan could also have allowed Brian to store items, as well.

The 7 th item is the sleeping bag. I chose this item, because it can protect me from the outside things which can make me sick, such as mosquitoes and viruses in the air, as well as, polluted soil. It also can protect me from rain. Brian wouldn’t have had trouble fighting the mosquitoes if he had had a sleeping bag. The sleeping bag could have protected him.

A first aid kit is the 8 th item on my list. This is, because if I get injured, there could be some scratches on my skin that would need help from an antibiotic cream or gel. I could be infected by viruses if I don’t treat wounds. As a result, I need a first aid kit to treat my wounds. Brian would have recovered much faster with the help of items in a first aid kit, rather than just waiting it for it to heal by itself.
