The MIA (minimum IFR altitude) for direct legs will be determined in accordance with FAR 91.177. This procedure states that you will use the VFR sectional. Plot your course, mark lines parallel 4 nm on each side of your course. Then do a search for the highest obstacle within the 8 nm wide area and add 1000 feet in non-mountainous terrain and 2000 feet in mountainous terrain to determine your MIA. Keep in mind this altitude will guarantee obstacle clearance but not navaid reception.
