Presentation transcript:

Warm Up: 2/25  1. What is your American Dream? (ie: what is your idea of success?)  2. Do you think the American Dream is still possible?  Notes Title: Dream Act

Objective and DOL  SWBAT  compare amnesty vs. deportation.  explain what the Dream Act is and determine it’s implications.  Is the Dream Act an act of amnesty or deportation? Justify your answer.  What are the implications of the DREAM Act for immigrants? ObjectiveDOL

Amnesty vs deportation  amnesty: 0-5?  Amnesty- a government’s pardon (forgiveness) of illegal offenses. In the case of immigration, this typically involves giving legal status to those here illegally.  deportation: 0-5?  deportation- the expulsion of an alien from a country Think-pair-share: describe deportation in your own words

Close Read  Read “DREAM” Act  If they meet these requirements, the DREAM Act would grant the applicants a six-year temporary residency. During this six-year period, applicants would have to either complete at least two years of college or serve in the military. After successfully fulfilling their obligations during the six-year period, they could apply for permanent residency.  Congress has considered the bill several times since the first version in 2003, but it has never passed. Silently answer the questions for discussion 1. What problem is the DREAM Act intended to resolve? 2. What are the main arguments for and against the DREAM Act? 3. What does the DREAM Act stand for? What is significant about the name? 4. What are implications of the DREAM Act for the people it would effect?

Close Read  The Dream Act did not pass, however President Obama did make an executive order for legislation very similar.  Read his executive order and answer the following questions:  1. What are benefits to his summary?  2. Do you think he left anything out/are their problems?

Warm Up: 2/26 1. Is the Dream Act an act of amnesty or deportation? Justify your answer. 2. Analyze the graph: write down 4 facts.  What implications follow from this data regarding The Dream Act?

Objective and DOL  SWBAT  Summarize SB 1070 and its different perspectives.  Is SB 1070 amnesty or deportation?  What is the reasoning behind the bill?  Are there problems with this reasoning?  What are issues people have with this bill?  Are these valid concerns? ObjectiveDOL

4 th Amendment  Summarize the following in your notes in your own words:  The fourth ammendment states: People have the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated and no warrants shall issue but upon probable cause.

Controversial Pieces of SB 1070  During a lawful stop, directs officers to determine immigration status of individuals who they reasonably suspect to be illegal aliens, and for all persons who are arrested.  Makes it a crime to harbor illegal individuals knowingly.  Authorizes officers to arrest an individual without a warrant if they have probable cause to believe the individual has committed any public offense that makes him/her removable from the U.S

Close Read Close read the article by circling key terms and summarizing paragraphs or chunks in the margins. Pay special attention to  Why was SB 1070 created?  Different opinions/perspectives of SB 1070

DOL  Is SB 1070 amnesty or deportation? Justify.  Why was the bill created?  What are issues people have with this bill?  Are these valid concerns?
