The games in Phase 1 were organised by the boys and ranged from : The violence of mob football To the relative sedateness of cricket From illegal poaching to organised hare and hounds from casual boating to rackets in the Quad. Hare and hounds An adaptation of fox hunting, where one boy runs away from a chasing pack, leaving a trail f paper as a ‘scent’ for them to follow.

Expansion Severe discipline from the Masters, lead to resentment from the boys, and a lot of hooligan behaviour. Lots of boys coming from all over the country. They all had different customs and traditions. Institutionalised Popular Recreation The popular recreation activities of the previous ages are now being institutionalised into schools. Activities range from childish hoops and quoits to barbaric mob football and bare knuckle boxing. Cricket already had rules, and was adopted by most schools.
