Adam BroadIan Gover E-safety in schools and beyond Involving the whole school community

E-safety relates to the education of using new technology responsibly and safely, focusing on raising awareness of the core messages of safe content, contact and commerce when using technology. This can include accessing websites and online content, , online chat rooms, mobile phones, gaming and games consoles, social networking sites, instant messaging (IM) and viruses and spam. There are a number of key risks to using new technologies, including: Physical danger Sexual abuse Bullying Identity theft Illegal behaviour Exposure to inappropriate content Obsessive use of ICT Copyright infringements Responding to Schools – A Guide for Schools Cardiff Advisory Service What is esafety?

Risks

Having considered the evidence I believe we need to move from a discussion about the media 'causing' harm to one which focuses on children and young people, what they bring to technology and how we can use our understanding of how they develop to empower them to manage risks and make the digital world safer. Tanya Byron – Safer Children in the Digital World Esafety – the changing picture
