E-safety relates to the education of using new technology responsibly and safely, focusing on raising awareness of the core messages of safe content, contact and commerce when using technology. This can include accessing websites and online content, , online chat rooms, mobile phones, gaming and games consoles, social networking sites, instant messaging (IM) and viruses and spam. Having considered the evidence I believe we need to move from a discussion about the media 'causing' harm to one which focuses on children and young people, what they bring to technology and how we can use our understanding of how they develop to empower them to manage risks and make the digital world safer. Current Research One in five 9-12 year olds have a Facebook profile, Percentage happy at putting this type of information online Photos of friends Photos of holidays What they are doing How they are feeling 58%54%51%46% Over half (56%) of respondents were aware of instances where images and videos were distributed further than the intended recipient, but only 23% believe this distribution is intended to cause upset.
Current Research Details from Middle school surveys Students (2053 replies): This survey looked at the use of computers in schools and at home... 95% of children use the internet more than once a week 88% of children use the internet more often at home At home 53% use the internet every day Most common use are social networks and games Most common way to communicate is text Children think they know about viruses and copyright Children are unsure about sexting, phising, flaming and malware 20% of children met someone in real life, who they had only met previously online and 60% choose not to take anyone with them
Current Research Details from Middle school surveys Staff: (151 Replies) This survey looked at the use of technology and the internet with pupils and evaluated common practices in lessons 68% of staff use computers with pupils more than once a week Pupils access a range of technologies, though ICT suites are the most common 52% reported that pupils access the internet regularly, with some control over the sites that they access 72% reported that pupils often bypass the filtering system Most staff believe cyber-bullying is a growing problem 1 in 5 staff are not familiar with the procedure for reporting e-safety incidents 45% of staff do not know if they have signed an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)
Current Research Details from Middle school surveys Parents (43 replies – representative?): Reponses from parents helped show us the prevalence of e-safety awareness in the home 98% believed that the school dealt positively with e-safety A high proportion of parents have internet access at home, with security software included A wide variety of technologies now commonly exist in the home including: X-box, i-touch, i-pad, PSP, Nintendo Wii, Playstation, Other gaming devices Parents are mostly concerned about harmful content, contact with others and cyber-bullying, but are confident to talk about this with their children About half would welcome an e-safety awareness evening at their school
