COPYRIGHT CRASH COURSE CLAUDIA MARQUEZ EDTC SEPTEMBER 4,2011

DO WE UNDERSTAND WHAT IS COPYRIGHT?  Take a minute and think about it, specially when you are utilizing materials from the web. Do you stop and think about the copy rights?  Many times we may think that materials in the web are for everybody's use and we may say those are, But are we been cautious enough to give credit to the writer?  How can we tell if the information is copyright and how is our usage limited.

HOW CAN I TELL WHAT IS COPYRIGHT ON THE WEB?  If the work is marked with a © it means it is copyright.  All materials even if those are marked as public are covered with the copyright laws.  In those cases you should check your copyright regulations and utilize what is permitted.  The following is a link that shows the Fair Use Chart for Teachers, though you may still need to check on the copyright laws. Use Matrix for Teachers

COPYRIGHT LAW  As the internet communication keeps on growing the copyright laws keep getting more flaws.  We do have guidelines of usage and laws that cover the writers, but many of those are not well stated.  There has also been an outgrow of ways in which the internet material can be utilize, but the regulation are sometimes not enough.

THE FOUR FAIR USE FACTORS:  What is the character of the use?  What is the nature of the work to be used?  How much of the work will you use?  What effect would this use have on the market for the original or for permissions if the use were widespread?

INDIVIDUAL LIABILITY FOR INFRINGEMENT  This is when the individual uses the copy right material and does not follow that copyright laws.  Willful infringement means that you knew you were infringing and you did it anyway.  The individual may also claim that he or she was not aware of the fair usage, but they may still be liable for damages.

HOW CAN YOU KEEP YOUR SELF AWAY FROM INFRINGEMENT?  Reading the Copyright laws  Reading the Fair Use Chart for Teachers.  And by following your institution advice of fair guidelines.

OTHER TYPES OF WORKS THAT YOU MAY FIND ON THE WEB *Public domain -These are works that can be utilized more broth. -These works may be coming from existing paper materials that are now becoming digitalized. *Orphan works -These are works in which many times the owner can not be determined. -The orphan works may not show the name or origin, but are still covered with the copyright laws.
