Background Information Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. Graduate of United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. Grant was appointed as a Brevet 2 nd Lieutenant in the 4 th US Infantry stationed in St. Louis, Missouri. In August 1853 promoted to title of captain. Grant was appointed Lieutenant General of the Union army in March 1864.
Role During the Civil War Grant was the Lieutenant General of the Union army from 1864 to In February 1862 he took Fort Henry and attacked Fort Donelson. Won the Battle of Vicksburg through skillful tactics. Fought a war of attrition against Robert E. Lee. Forced Lee to surrender at Appomattox Court House.
