The Holocaust What is it? The word “holocaust” means a mass destruction and loss of life. The Holocaust of Europe lasted from During this time, it is estimated that 6 million Jews and 5 million other minorities were killed.

How did Hitler do it? Adolf Hitler used propaganda against Jews and minorities to make the Germans believe they would be “better off” without those people.

This poster shows a Jew “cheating” a German woman out of money. It also illustrates Jews as having large noses. This poster shows a Jew holding a communist sign and holding lots of money.

What is a Jewish Ghetto? A Jewish ghetto is a place where Jews, rounded up by the Nazis, lived during World War II until being brought to a concentration camp Frequently in ghettos, Jews were beaten or killed randomly. Basic food needs were not met and all were forced to wear the Star of David patch. The ghetto was sealed and Jews could not leave. 230,000 people were confined in this area.

Auschwitz Concentration Camp Auschwitz began originally as a work camp for Jews, but over time, became a place of death. There existed gas chambers for prisoners too weak or young. Not only Jews were sent to Auschwitz. Many minorities were also sent there including: gypsies, Poles, and Soviet prisoners of war (POW). No one knows exactly how many Jews were killed there. It is estimated at 1.1 million.
