What happened? Franz Ferdinand was shot through the neck and died His pregnant wife, Sophie, was shot in the stomach and died.

The gunman was arrested after he had drank cyanide and attempted suicide.

Reason #3: NATIONALISM Nationalism encouraged small nations to gain power in the world = Small nations wanting to break away from large nations (ex: Great Britain) = FIGHTING

Reason #4 IMPERIALISM Few areas were left to colonize = Less land, money, and power = FIGHTING

Reason #5 MILITARISM: Strengthen armies to protect land, money, and power Germany, France, and Russia developed HUGE armies Great Britain had the world’s strongest and largest navy Nations challenged each other’s military strength and power
