Inverse Operations

How do we undo an operation? If I owe Brandie $1 then how can I get rid of my debt? What math operation would you use to do that?

How do we undo an operation? If I have 8 slugs. How do I get rid of them? What math operation would you use to do that?

If each student in the class gave Ms If each student in the class gave Ms. Spangler 2 pencils (5x2) so she has 10 pencils total. How do I give back, or distributed, evenly those pencils? What math operation would you use?

Inverse operations Definition: an inverse operation is any mathematical operation (+, -, x, ÷) that undoes another operation. ADDITION is the Inverse Operation of SUBTRACTION SUBTRACTION is the Inverse Operation of ADDITION MULTIPLICATION is the Inverse Operation of DIVISION DIVISION is the Inverse Operation of MULTIPLICATION

So lets undo some operations +12 -12 =0

So lets undo some operations -6 +6 =0

So lets undo some operations x6 ÷6 =1

Remember when we add or subtract 0 from an equation it doesn’t change the equation. 5 + 0 = 5 14 - 0 Remember when we multiply

So lets undo some operations +4

So lets undo some operations 4÷__

Apply to Algebraic Equations 15 + x = 25 +  So we are going to + or –  These are the 2 equations we will solve. -15 -15 0 + x = 10 x = 10

Apply to Algebraic Equations - 3 + x = 25 +  So we are going to + or –  These are the 2 equations we will solve. +3 +3 0 + x = 28 x = 28

Apply to Algebraic Equations 𝑥 3 = 2 +  So we are going to x or /  These are the 2 equations we will solve. x3 x3 1x = 6 x = 6

Apply to Algebraic Equations 5 - z = 25 +  So we are going to x or /  These are the 2 equations we will solve. -5 -5 0 - z = 20 - z = 5 x(-1) x(-1) z = -5
