DIFFERENT LENSES

 Have you ever seen or used a camera that had different lenses? Each lens creates a unique effect. Some lenses let you zoom very close to an object while others let you take photographs of an entire horizon. What is the purpose of a lens? One purpose is that it lets you look at a scene in a particular way. You can look at the past through different lenses, too. Some of the “lenses” historians look through are economics, technology, government, culture, and geography. These are some of the major forces that affect events and individual choices.

WHAT QUESTIONS COME TO MIND WHEN LOOKING AT THIS PICTURE?

Cultural Lens  How old do you think the boys are?  How long do you think they worked each day?  Do you think they went to school?  Do you think they planned to work here their whole lives? LOOKING AT THE PHOTO THROUGH …

Economic Lens  Why were textile mills in NC?  Who bought the fabric made at the mills?  How many people worked at the mills? LOOKING AT THE PHOTO THROUGH …

Government Lens  Did NC ‘s laws help mill workers? LOOKING AT THE PHOTO THROUGH…

Technology Lens  What type of technology were used in early textile mills? LOOKING AT THE PHOTO THROUGH…

Geography Lens  Where were most textile mills located in NC? LOOKING AT THE PHOTO THROUGH…
