The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) is funded by all of the UK University and College funding bodies The JISC’s mission is to provide world-class leadership in the innovative use of Information and Communications Technology to support education and research. JISC achieves this through the provision of: –Infrastructure – JISC National Data Centres –Services – JISC Collections, JISC Legal, Plagiarism Advisory Service, Regional Support Centres –Leadership – Advocacy on issues such as Open Access, Intellectual Property, Access management JISC focuses on 8 strategic themes – Network, Access Management, Information Environment, e-Resources, e-Learning, e-Research, e-Administration, Business and Community Engagement

JISC Collections is a JISC service established as a company in 2006 Mission: To support UK research and education by delivering affordable, relevant and sustainable online content –JISC Collections is responsible for negotiating and managing licences for electronic information resources –JISC Collections aims to widen accessibility, to save the academic sector time and money, and to improve management of licensing by the sector Currently responsible for 80+ agreements with over 4,000 subscriptions Publishers include – Elsevier, the BBC, Cengage Gale, ProQuest CSA, Oxford University Press, Thomson Scientific, Hulton Getty, HW Wilson, Wiley Blackwell, Cambridge University Press, Sage Publications, Taylor and Francis In 2007 savings to the JISC community from JISC Collections activities are estimated at £33.8 million

JISC Collections 04 September 2014 | Presentation to PRATT-SILS MA Summer School | Slide 6 Realising the potential of online resources Working to achieve the JISC’s objectives through the its activities The JISC Model Licence –Used with all JISC Collections Agreements –Allows institutions and their users to get the best value from resources through flexible terms of use that offer stability and security to both users and providers –Requires compliance with JISC supported Access Management technologies –Support for OpenURL, accessibility standards, institutional repositories, creation of learning materials etc The JISC Model licence is updated annually to take account of changes in: –The business environment – experimenting with new business models –The scholarly environment – VLE’s, reuse of learning materials –The information environment – changes in access management technologies, preservation requirements etc
