Word Problems What again?

 It can be hard to turn words into equations.  Take each word or phrase and create the equation one step at a time.  Find a positive number such that 3 times the number is 2 less than 4 times the number. Crazy Number Problems Let “x” be some number. “3 times the number” means: 3x “is” means: = “2 less than” means: - 2 “4 times the number” means: 4x Put it all together and solve. 3x = 4x – 2 - x = - 2 x = 2

 Consecutive integers means numbers in a order.  1, 2, 3, 4, …  Consecutive even integers means even numbers in order.  2, 4, 6, 8, …  Consecutive odd integers means, you guessed it, odd numbers in order.  1, 3, 5, 7, … Crazy Number Problems

 Find two consecutive even integers such that 5 times the smaller number is 2 more than 4 times the larger number. Crazy Word Problems  Then solve.  5x = 4(x + 2) + 2  5x = 4x  5x = 4x + 10  x = 10  The numbers are 10 and 12.  x is the smaller number. x + 2 would be the next even integer.  “5 times the smaller number” means:  5x  “2 more than” means:  +2  “4 times the larger number” means:  4(x + 2)

 The perimeter of a figure is the distance around the outside.  You find perimeter by adding together all the sides.  Draw a picture to help with these.  The perimeter of a rectangle is 44inches. The length is 8 more than 6 times the width. What are the dimensions? Perimeter 6w + 8 w Perimeter of a Rectangle is: P = 2l + 2w 44 = 2(6w + 8) + 2w 44 = 12w w 44 = 14w = 14w w = 2 inches If the width is 2 inches, then find the length. L = 6w + 8 = 6(2) + 8 = = 20 The length is 20 inches.
