Southeast Regional Educause Conference, June 6, 2005 Preliminary Mission Statement The Center will –be a collaborative effort of the divisions of Academic Affairs and Information Technology to establish a coordinated program for professional faculty development in learning, teaching, and the integration of innovative technologies. –support MTSU’s student-centered learning and teaching environment. Building on the strengths and capabilities of the University’s learning community, the Center will become a model and a recognized resource that sets the standard in higher education for excellence for faculty in learning, teaching, and the integration of innovative technologies. –further serve to build collaborative partnerships among faculty seeking excellence in learning and teaching.

Southeast Regional Educause Conference, June 6, 2005 Timeline Fall 2002: –Began discussions between the divisions on the feasibility of the partnership. Spring 2003 – Fall 2003 –Continued discussion with an ad hoc Teaching Excellence Group. –Both divisions appointed Co-directors. –Continued discussions on Center activities and initiated planning on a continuing series of development opportunities that drew upon campus resources and experts.

Southeast Regional Educause Conference, June 6, 2005 Timeline Spring 2004 –Both divisions submitted budget requests for jointly funding the Center and staff positions. –Initiated an inventory of faculty development opportunities on campus and a mechanism for updating the listing per semester. –Initiated development of a website for the Center. –Developed job descriptions for Faculty Development Coordinator and Executive Assistant. –Held a mini-faculty development institute that drew upon campus experts to present topics (Faculty planned and presented; ~100 faculty attended)

Southeast Regional Educause Conference, June 6, 2005 Timeline Fall Spring 2005: –President McPhee announced the opening of the Center –Held a Fall 2004 Faculty Development Institute – 1 ½ day with nationally recognized speakers; ~70 faculty attended. –Convened a team to discuss Center activities. –Continued to develop, implement and evaluate the Center’s agenda and operations. –Sought site for Center

Southeast Regional Educause Conference, June 6, Agenda Goal: Establish Center as a primary resource for teaching excellence. –Objectives: Establish a faculty advisory council. Establish the Center’s physical and virtual location. Develop and implement a promotion and marketing strategy. Devise a long range plan for optimal development of the Center to include facility, coordination of services, and staffing. Develop and implement a plan to assess the Center’s impact on learning and teaching via the creative and effective integration of appropriate pedagogies and technologies.

Southeast Regional Educause Conference, June 6, Agenda Goal: Develop, promote, and provide learning teaching, and technology opportunities for faculty. –Objectives: Compile an inventory of faculty development resources. Develop and implement a “New Instructors” series that highlights effective pedagogies and technologies. Develop and implement a “College Showcase” series that focuses on effective pedagogies and technologies. Identify and support two faculty fellows for academic year. Expand ShareFair to incorporate a variety of pedagogical and technological demonstrations.
