Update from: Clinical & Translational Science (CTS) Working Group Gerry Quinnan, MD – Chair June 11, 2010

CTS Team Composition Gerry Quinnan, MD – Preventive Medicine Ann Jerse, PhD – Microbiology & Immunology Kent DeZee, MD - Medicine Ron Gimbel, PhD – Biomedical Informatics

CTS Data Sources AAMC Medical School Objectives Project: Contemporary Issues in Medicine (2001) Report of the AAMC-Howard Hughes Medical Institute (2009) Clinical Research Competencies (CTSA Education Working Group – 2009) Ad hoc survey of GME Program Directors (2010; DeZee) Ad hoc survey of basic science faculty (2010; Jerse) Review of current CTSA award winners; their engagement with medical students (2010; Gimbel)

Overall Strategy Our report to the curriculum reform working groups will include four key elements: – Description of competencies pertinent to clinical and translational science (CTS) already addressed by SOM – Additional competencies addressed by other medical schools (with CTSA awards) and documents (e.g. AAMC-HHMI report) – Description of potential electives that could be offered to medical students – Identification of need for, and recommended structure of, a formal CTS mentoring program for students

Progress to Date Organizing meeting May 18 th Defined strategy Division of labor Agreed on next steps Dr. DeZee reported feedback (n=3)

Initial Feedback from GME Program Directors (n=3) Potential interest in 4 th year student experience in clinical research Students could potentially conduct database research, assist with an ongoing trial, assist with systematic review, help craft a new research idea, author a case report, etc. Would require “umbrella” IRB approval Potential to involve residents and fellows as teachers Require CITI course on protection of Human Subjects prior to arrival

Next Steps Dr. Jerse discuss CTS with basic science faculty Dr. DeZee discuss CTS with National Capital Area GME Program Directors Dr. Gimbel to identify with CTSA awardees are doing
