1. Definition of Interpreting Interpreter: one who translates orally for parties conversing in different languages Interpret: to act as an interpreter between speakers of different languages Interpretation: the act or the result of interpreting Interpreting: an oral translation activity

2. Types of Interpreting 1. Consecutive Interpreting (CI) *has the time to take notes and analyze the message *Widely used on many occasions, such as press conferences, welcoming addresses, speeches for banquets and business negotiations. *Time-consuming * Audience has to listen both the source language (SL: )and the target language (TL: )

2. Simultaneous Interpreting (SI) * the SL audience and the TL audience get the message nearly at the same time * the average interpretation quality of SI is generally below that of CI * Money-consuming
