THE YORKE PENINSULA ALKALINE SOILS GROUP HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED FOR 14 YEARS, THE LAST YEAR HAS SEEN A CHANGE IN STAFFING, AN UPDATED WEBSITE AND CONTINUED FARMER DRIVEN RESEARCH. THE GROUP CURRENTLY MANAGES SEVERAL PROJECTS INCLUDING THOSE ON WEED MANAGEMENT IN NO TILL SYSTEMS, CONTROL OF NET FORM NET BLOTCH, PA, IPM, NATIVE WOODLAND MANAGEMENT, MANAGING CLIMATE VARIABILITY, BROME GRASS MANAGEMENT (IN COLLABORATION WITH NSS) AND SNAIL MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES. THE GROUP HAS ALSO RECENTLY STARTED FOCUS GROUP ON LIVESTOCK MANAGEMENT WHICH WILL MEET REGULARLY TO DISCUSS LOCAL LIVESTOCK ISSUES AND TOPICS. IN THE COMING YEAR WE HOPE TO EXPAND THE LIVESTOCK GROUP, AND WILL BE INVOLVED IN NEW PROJECTS ON SUBJECTS INCLUDING RETAINED STUBBLE, CARBON FARMING INITIATIVES, SOCIAL MEDIA AND MORE INNOVATIVE SNAIL MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES. THE GROUP APPRECIATES THE ONGOING SUPPORT OF MEMBERS, SPONSORS AND FUNDING BODIES AS WE STRIVE TO BE A VIBRANT, FARMER DRIVEN SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR A LONG TIME TO COME.

Carbon farming day – helping to educate landholders on carbon farming initiatives including bio char trials in paddock inspection.

THE CARBON FARMING DAY ALSO INCLUDED A VISIT BY JEAN TURNER FROM DEWNR WHO LED A TOUR OF ON FARM SITES INCLUDED IN THE GROUP’S MAINTAINING NATIVE VEGETATION AND BIODIVERSITY TRIALS. THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS TO RAISE LANDHOLDER AWARENESS OF SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF LOCAL BUSHLAND AND ITS BENEFITS TO LANDHOLDERS.

INAUGURAL MEMBER’S AND SPONSOR’S PRE HARVEST DINNER.

YPASG CONTINUES TO FOCUS ON RESEARCH INTO SNAIL CONTROL, CARRYING OUT TRIALS WITH CAFFEINE BAITS AND HOLDING A SPREADER DAY TO CALIBRATE EFFICIENT SPREADING OF SNAIL BAIT.
