doc.: IEEE /0149r0 Submission Jan 2008 Andrew Myles (Cisco)Slide 2 This liaison presentation is made to the IEEE WG on behalf of the Wi-Fi Alliance Andrew Myles, the presenter is: Employed by Cisco Systems Affiliated with Cisco Systems Chairman of the Wi-Fi Alliance Presenting on behalf of the Wi-Fi Alliance This liaison will focus on: A summary of the 2007 from the perspective of the Wi-Fi Alliance An outline of the Wi-Fi Alliance’s plans for 2008

doc.: IEEE /0149r0 Submission Jan 2008 Andrew Myles (Cisco)Slide was a landmark year for the Wi-Fi Alliance and the Wi-Fi industry Highlights include: Continuing exceptional Wi-Fi Alliance and industry growth Introduction of Wi-Fi Protected Setup certification to encourage the use of security by the average user Introduction of draft 2.0 certification to encourage interoperability of pre standard products The appointment of a new Executive Director

doc.: IEEE /0149r0 Submission Jan 2008 Andrew Myles (Cisco)Slide 4 The Wi-Fi industry experienced continuing and exceptional growth in 2007 In-Stat reports that about 300 million chipsets shipped in 2007 (41% growth over 2006) This is also a significant step towards achieving ABI forecasts of one billion units per annum by 2011

doc.: IEEE /0149r0 Submission Jan 2008 Andrew Myles (Cisco)Slide 5 The Wi-Fi Alliance also experienced continuing growth in 2007 in support of the Wi-Fi industry The Wi-Fi Alliance ended 2007 with 336 members (8% growth over 2006) –Wi-Fi Alliance membership includes 27 Adopter members, which is a cheaper form of membership for non certifying companies An unprecedented 900+ products were Wi-Fi CERTIFIED in 2007, making more than 4100 certified products since 2000 There were 1.7 billion “impressions” for “Wi-Fi Certified” in 2007 (300% increase over 2006) Consumers are looking for “Wi-Fi Certified” (70% in the US, 68% in the UK, 52% in China) with the majority willing to pay more

doc.: IEEE /0149r0 Submission Jan 2008 Andrew Myles (Cisco)Slide 6 Wi-Fi Protected Setup encourages the use of security by the average home or SOHO user In January 2007, the Wi-Fi Alliance launched Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ with the goal of making it easier to set up, protect, and expand a home or small office Wi-Fi network –Wi-Fi Protected Setup halves the number of steps to configure a network and enable security This program was based upon the first specification developed entirely by the Wi-Fi Alliance that allows configuration using: –a short PIN –the push of a button –a Near-Field Communication (NFC) token More than 180 products achieved Wi-Fi Protected Setup certification in 2007

doc.: IEEE /0149r0 Submission Jan 2008 Andrew Myles (Cisco)Slide draft 2.0 recognises the market need to promote interoperability of pre standard products Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ n draft 2.0, representing the next generation of Wi-Fi, arrived on 25 June 2007 The response from the media & analysts was very positive with most applauding Wi-Fi Alliance’s efforts to promote interoperability ahead of the standard’s ratification This program has been a catalyst for substantial market uptake of the technology and stemmed the proliferation of non- interoperable “pre-11n” devices By the end of the year more than190 products had achieved n draft 2.0 certification In-Stat reports that about 9% of total chipsets shipped in 2007 supported n draft 2.0

doc.: IEEE /0149r0 Submission Jan 2008 Andrew Myles (Cisco)Slide 8 The Wi-Fi Alliance recently appointed a new Executive Director The Wi-Fi Alliance congratulates Edgar Figueroa for his appointment as the new Executive Director of the WFA

doc.: IEEE /0149r0 Submission Jan 2008 Andrew Myles (Cisco)Slide 9 The Wi-Fi Alliance will continue to support both important standards and market needs in 2008 The Wi-Fi Alliance will continue focusing on certification of standards that satisfy market needs –There will be a near-term emphasis on voice applications in both the home & enterprise environments –There are activities looking at mesh, Wi-Fi security and convergence certifications –Work may be undertaken on understanding vehicular, public safety, VHT, video, home monitoring and management issues Member meetings will be held in in Prague (February), Austin (June) and Shanghai (October) Regional outreach efforts will be held in Taiwan, India, and China
