1111 Reliability Society 2012 Chapter Congress Eric Wong Vice President, Technical Activities Denver, Colorado June 17, 2012 Report on Technical Activities by Eric Wong at the 2012 RS Chapter Congress

2 Technical Committees Report on Technical Activities by Eric Wong at the 2012 RS Chapter Congress

33 Current Status & Path Forward  Some are active  Most of them are dormant Report on Technical Activities by Eric Wong at the 2012 RS Chapter Congress

44 Lessons Learned by the Computer Society  “Special Technical Communities” in IEEE Computer, June 2011 (Vol. 44, No. 6) pp Report on Technical Activities by Eric Wong at the 2012 RS Chapter Congress

5555  Instead of many small committees each with a limited number of members, we propose to create only a few committees, each with several sub-committees focusing on different emerging and timely topics.  Subcommittees can be formed, expanded, or even dissolved dynamically in response to the community's needs and the latest trends in technology.  The parent Technical Committees will remain active for the purpose of continuity and to help the Reliability Society maintain a core group of scientists and practitioners. A New Model (1) Report on Technical Activities by Eric Wong at the 2012 RS Chapter Congress

6666  Each Technical Committee has a Chair  Each subcommittee has a Coordinator  Chairs and coordinators must be affiliated with RS  Committee members also preferred to be RS members, but some exceptions can be made –Need wide buy-in from the communities (industry, academia, government agencies, international organizations, etc.) A New Model (2) Report on Technical Activities by Eric Wong at the 2012 RS Chapter Congress

7777  Each technical committee and/or its subcommittees will have regular meetings (2 or 3 times each year) at conferences attended by a majority of its members. –Not only reduce the traveling cost but also make it convenient for people to attend these meetings.  All the committees will have a strong participation in the Society’s Annual Technology Report and RS Newsletter A New Model (3) Report on Technical Activities by Eric Wong at the 2012 RS Chapter Congress

88  PHM –including Device Reliability  Software and System Assurance (SQA) –including SW & System Reliability, Security, Safety, etc.  Trustworthy Computing (TC) –including Wireless & Internet Reliability  A few more! Technical Committees on Selected Topics Report on Technical Activities by Eric Wong at the 2012 RS Chapter Congress

99 Technical Committee on PHM  Chair: TBD  Subcommittees & Coordinators –PHM System Engineering: Rex Sallade, Joe Childs, Eric Bechhoefer –PHM Devices/Sensors: David He, Rex Sallade, Michael Pecht –PHM Software/Logic/Reasoning: Jie (Peter) Liu, Maciej Zawodniok, Sreerupa (Rupa) Das –PHM Design Techniques & Algorithms: Pingfeng Wang, Eric Bechhoefer, Byeng Youn –Non-Destructive Evaluations (NDE): Yiming Deng –PHM Applications: Rex Sallade, Joe Childs, Eric Bechhoefer –Medical Diagnostic-Prognostic Equipment: Peter Ghavami –Electric Vehicle Prognostic Equipment: Pradeep Lall –Energy Generation PHM Based Equipment: Pradeep Ramuhalli, Leonard Bond, Eric Bechhoefer –PHM Research: Pradeep Lall, Michael Pecht, Maciej Zawodniok –Prognostics: Michael Pecht, Maciej Zawodniok, Rafael Gouriveau Report on Technical Activities by Eric Wong at the 2012 RS Chapter Congress

10 Technical Committee on SQA  Focusing on domains such as smart phones, mobile applications, cloud testing, security and safety testing, etc.  Advisors: Jeff Voas & C V Ramamoorthy  Chair: Eric Wong  Members: –Steve Yau, Karama Kanoun, Phil Laplante, Angelos Stavrou, Huimin Lin, Ji Wang, Sam Keene, Shiuhpyng Shieh –Amit Paradkar, Mike Hinchey, –A few more Report on Technical Activities by Eric Wong at the 2012 RS Chapter Congress
